Canoeing: exercise and fun

Canoes were developed by cultures all over the world.Canoeing can be done as a hobby, a sport or as a fun activity on holidays. You can paddle on rivers, lakes and the sea.

Many people assume that canoeing is as simple as hopping in a canoe and setting off. However, paddling skills and an understanding of how to manage weight and boat balance are critical.

Health benefits of canoeing:

– Improves cardiovascular fitness
– Increases muscle strength, particularly in the back, arms, shoulders and chest, from moving the paddle
– Can be peaceful and meditative or can be exhilarating – depending on where and how you do it.

Make sure to use a properly fitting personal flotation device at all times when you are in or near water. Also, dress appropriately for the water temps and conditions as well as weather conditions.
